Whats in a lure?

I have tried so many lures over the years it's not even funny. Crank baits, spinners, rubber, soft, hard, bottom, mid and top water. Not to mention every color in the spectrum of color. Oh, let’s not forget those lures with rattles in them, those noisy little buggers. Every time with this herculean amount of lures (not to mention the money spent) it was still a crap shoot for a good day of fishing, frustrating to say the least.

Now let’s look at why. What are these lures supposed to replicate, live bait right? Have you ever seen anything in the water that looks like a neon green and yellow spinner bait? Me ether. What makes a good lure is one that looks natural and behaves natural. For instance Lunkerhunts Lunker frog. This soft body top water realistic looking frog has legs, that when pull or jerked straighten out and then retract again. I have pulled more bass with this lure than any other that I have in my arsenal. I even go as far as buying a new one every time I go to Dicks Sporting goods or Bass pro shop just in case Lunkerhunt stops production I still have a stock of my own.

Lets talk about presentation, 9 time out of 10 fish bass are looking for easy prey. Making top water lures twitch in a fashion that resembles an injured or dyeing fish, frog or what have you, making for that easy meal. Pick and bass are ambush fish also hiding in weed beds and lily pads. Keeping weedless lures are a must for bass. You can fish open water all day long and not get a single hit, drop a weedless frog in the foliage and watch what happens.

In the end keep your lures looking realistic looking and acting half dead!
